In a major initiative aimed at protecting the health of the younger generation, the Ministry of Health is introducing a new, updated health regulation governing the operation of school canteens, dining facilities, and vending machines in all primary and secondary schools across the country.

The new regulation replaces the previous framework introduced in 2013 and was developed based on recommendations from the National Nutrition Committee, taking into account the latest scientific evidence.

The objective is for the 2026–2027 school year to begin with full compliance by all relevant stakeholders, ensuring that the school environment functions as a model for healthy eating and the protection of students’ health.

What Is Changing

Under the new framework, strict quality standards are being established for products that may be sold on school premises.

Among the key changes are:

• A complete ban on processed meats (cold cuts and deli meats)
• Mandatory reductions in portion sizes for specific food items
• A total ban on the sale of soft drinks

The initiative was introduced by Deputy Minister of Health Eirini Agapidaki and forms part of the broader National Program for Combating Childhood Obesity.

Commenting on the publication of the new regulation, Agapidaki stated:

“Addressing childhood obesity is not a theoretical battle. It is a daily act of responsibility that begins where our children spend most of their day: at school.

With this new health regulation, we are fundamentally changing the rules of the game. We are updating the framework based on the strictest scientific evidence, permanently removing processed meats and soft drinks from school canteens, and reducing portion sizes, thereby creating an environment that actively protects students.

This initiative is a central pillar of our national efforts to combat childhood obesity. We are tackling the problem at its root, protecting our children and providing them with the tools they need to adopt healthy eating habits that will stay with them throughout their lives.

We are not compromising when it comes to the health of the next generation. The responsible authorities must move immediately to implement the necessary measures so that the new school year begins with our schools fully aligned with these new, healthier standards.”
