12-year-old boy Abdulsamad, just a young boy, jumped off one off one of the three little boats that arrived on the Greek island of Lesbos early on Monday. Glasses carefully secured with a makeshift cable, he clung to a rubber ring and stood disorientated. The joy of youth could be seen even under such dire circumstances as he smiled nervously at strangers, embarrassed that his family was getting him out of wet clothes. Now behind bars after a perilous journey from Syria, he told his story to ITV.
He is just one of more than 40,000 immigrants that have arrived on Greek territory this year. Abdulsamad is really nobody special, just another person arriving in a country which is free from tyranny and war but still has a crisis of its own to handle.
