Police announced that the main suspect in the gruesome Washington DC quadruple murder, Daron Wint, had blood matching one of the victims on his shoe when arrested. Forensic analysis matched the traces of blood but did not specify which victim’s blood. This announcement comes at a time when lawyer Robin Ficker, representing Wint, states that his client is “a kind, gentle, non-aggressive person” and is the “wrong guy” arrested for the murders of Savvas, Amy, and Philip Savopoulos and their housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa. The four victims were discovered in the Savopoulos mansion on May 14 when it was set on fire. The three adult victims died after being struck and stabbed, but the son had died after being tortured with “thermal and sharp force injuries.”
Unsealed warrants state that the cell phones of the adults murdered were missing after the crime. Police had hoped that the cell phone data might help give further clues concerning the crime.
Wint, who once worked for the family, is being charged to holding the four victims captive on May 13 and murdering them after he received $40,000 in cash after he killed them and set fire to their house.
The three members of the Savopoulos family were laid to rest on June 1 by two surviving daughters who were away at borading schools at the time of the murder. Figueroa will be returned to her native El Salvador.
In the wake of the murder, Wint’s father, Daron Wint released a statement to express his sorrow for the family:
“I would like the family of the victims to know that our thoughts and prayers are with them. We did not know any of the victims, Mr. Savvas Savopoulos, his wife, Amy; 10-year-old son, Philip; or Ms. Veralicia Figueroa, an employee of their family.
But my family and friends also grieve this tragic and senseless loss. It pains me that my son, who lived with me and my wife (his stepmother) for a brief period over the years, is charged with this crime. We do not have any of the details and have been cooperative with the authorities throughout the process.
What we do know is that this crime was egregious and heartless and we hope that whoever committed these heinous crimes — my son included — will suffer the consequences of their actions. This violence is in no way an indication of the life we live or the values that my family embraces.
We understand that there is a desire from many in our community to know more and to hear from us. But we would respectfully ask members of the media to respect our privacy and our desire not to have any additional comments or participate in any interviews as this case moves through the judicial system.”
A preliminary hearing is expected on June 23.
