A major cultural event this summer is taking place in the capital of the Cyclades, Ermoupoli, at the Cyclades Art Gallery. It is an exhibition by Greek artist Theodoros Papagiannis, originally from Epirus.

Theodoros Papagiannis: Sculptor’s Exhibition Inaugurated in Ermoupoli, Syros

An exhibition–milestone for Greece, with deep respect for the tradition of sculpture, drawing from the personal experiences of the distinguished artist, who as a person is fully reconciled with his own life experiences, history, and self, transforming archetypal symbols into ideas which in turn become art.

Thodoris Papagiannis, simple and modest, produces work far from cheap showmanship, remaining focused on the pure moments of his life in an unadorned, simple and essential manner.

Characteristic works include “The Class of My Elementary School” (2009), an installation with plaster students; “The Runners” (2011), made of stainless steel and installed at Chicago International Airport; the imposing and proud “Totems”, the “Heads”, the “Erotic Works”, among others.

After eight months of preparation, curator Takis Mavrotas succeeded in bringing together all the local institutions of the island into an excellent artistic orchestration—a celebration of art that can only make us proud of our country.

A charismatic personality himself, with many years of experience in the field of art curation and exhibitions, a truly valuable figure for Greece, he spread joy and emotion, giving a special atmosphere to the opening night in Ermoupoli, in the presence of Antonis Komninos, President of the homonymous Foundation, the Mayor of Syros–Ermoupoli Alexandros Athanasiou, as well as the Minister of Development Olga Kefalogianni. The evening was attended by distinguished guests from the art world, as befitting the occasion.

In beautiful Syros, the jewel of the Cyclades, a cycle was both completed and opened in parallel—one we hope will remain unchanged through the years.
