Authorities in Piraeus have been placed on heightened alert following a report of a possible gas leak at a fuel station located at the junction of Omiridou Skylitsi and Pythagora Streets.

Strong Fire Service units have rushed to the area, while the Hellenic Police has proceeded with traffic restrictions and the exclusion of the area for safety reasons.

According to information released by the Fire Service, its Operations Centre was informed of the incident at approximately 11:30, and 29 firefighters with 11 vehicles from the Fire Services of Piraeus, Megara, and Elefsina are currently at the scene. A specialised team from the 1st Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) is also on its way.

At the same time, an order was issued for the precautionary evacuation of neighbouring apartment buildings, in order to protect residents until the checks by the competent crews are completed.

The petrol station is closed.

Fire Service crews are carrying out measurements and inspecting both the station’s facilities and the surrounding area in order to determine whether there is indeed a gas leak or whether another cause triggered the mobilisation.

Traffic restrictions

According to the latest update from the authorities, due to a natural gas leak from a fuel station in Piraeus, emergency traffic measures have been put in place to ensure public safety and facilitate the work of emergency response crews.
