A 46-year-old woman accused of taking part in the fatal 2010 arson attack on Marfin Bank in central Athens, in which three bank employees died during an arson attack carried out in a general strike protest against austerity measures, has been transferred to the prosecutor’s office this morning to have her arrest warrant executed, before she is expected to appear later today before an investigating magistrate to answer the charges against her.

The suspect spent the night in cells at Athens police headquarters, before leaving for the prosecutor’s office shortly before 10am to have the arrest warrant issued against her executed. She is then expected to appear before the investigating magistrate to respond to the charges she faces.

The woman arrived in Athens late last night on a flight from London, accompanied by a team from Greece’s Organised Crime Prevention and Confrontation Division. The officers had travelled to London the previous morning to collect her. From the airport, she was taken to the cells at Attica Police Headquarters.

The woman, a mother of two, has lived in Brighton, England, for years. Police investigations found she was one of those involved in the attack on the bank on 5 May 2010, with authorities attributing a supporting role to her. She was arrested at Gatwick Airport on Monday 13 July as she prepared to fly to Athens, after Greek authorities had activated an Interpol red notice against her. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges and said she wished to explain herself before the courts.

The two main defendants in the case are men aged 42. One had a coordinating role and reportedly gave the orders for the attack; the other had an operational role and reportedly smashed the bank’s window so that molotov cocktails could be thrown inside, starting the fire that killed the three employees. Both men are currently being held, in Malandrino and Nafplio prisons respectively.
