The European Commission rocks the proverbial boat in Athens, while the new government is not only trying to find its stride but is also beset by internal strife after the reshuffle and the Treasury officials which have been suspended.
The EC, watching the developments in Athens, is trying to remind officials that Greece has clear obligations to fulfill if it is to take the outstanding installments in May and June, resulting from the agreement with the lenders and the implementation of the fiscal adjustment program.
So, through leaks under anonymity, the EC notes that the satisfaction of the prerequisites is a basic condition for the disbursement of the two installments that Greece is expecting, totaling two billion euros.
“We expected the prerequisites of May to be met. I believe that this will happen before the end of June”, stated a European official.
He noted, in fact, that the next Troika assessment, which is associated with the restructuring of Greek debt “will not begin if Greece has not met the 12 prerequisites”.
He also hopes, however, that the discussions within the framework of a new evaluation will be easy and will go smoothly, while he quickly said that the Troika’s technical team will be travelling to Athens in July.
