German woman claims baby found frozen in Kypseli is her own

Her lawyer insists no murder charge has yet been filed, as neighbours describe filth and locked doors at the family's former flat, while forensic examiners found the nine-month-old boy suffered at least 10 stab wounds

Christos Psarras, the lawyer representing the 38-year-old German woman at the centre of the case involving the infant found in Kypseli, has addressed the case file opened against her, clarifying that the charges she currently faces relate solely to drugs.

“I met with my client yesterday. We need to make one thing clear: in this particular case file, the charges brought against her concern drugs. No other offence, whether a felony or one carrying felony-level severity, has been attributed to her so far,” he said.

Speaking to Greek broadcaster Star, Psarras also addressed the 38-year-old’s claims about why, according to what she herself has said, she had the child inside the suitcase. “There is an answer. She told me why she had it in the suitcase. She told me this, and she has also said it publicly, so I can repeat it: it is normal, when a mother, so she claims, loses her child and may be suffering from a psychiatric illness, for her to act this way. It is not normal under any circumstances,” the lawyer said.

He also added that, according to what the 38-year-old has stated, the child was hers, and said the woman is a long-term drug user who, by her own account, began using after losing her child. “The child is hers, she has said so herself to journalists. She is a long-term drug user, she started when she lost her child,” Psarras said.

Infant was a nine-month-old boy

According to the coroner, the infant found frozen and dead inside a suitcase in a flat in Kypseli was a baby boy aged between eight and nine months. However, it has not yet been possible to establish exactly when he was killed.

The killing was revealed by the coroner’s examination, which found at least 10 wounds on the infant’s back, with reports indicating he had been stabbed with a knife. Following the coroner’s findings, the Greek Police (ELAS) has opened a case file for homicide against those arrested at the flat in Kypseli.

Questioning of the suspects is due to begin today, while the process of interviewing the three minors who were in the house, a 15-year-old girl and two boys aged nine and 12, is still pending. This will be carried out through the House of the Child, a specialist facility for interviewing child abuse victims, with child psychologists present.

ELAS spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou said on Tuesday morning that none of those arrested has explained the condition in which the infant was found, with the family saying he was born in a maternity hospital, without giving further details.
