At least two people were killed and six injured in a “massive” overnight Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, according to regional governor Andrei Vorobyov.

The mayor of the Russian capital, Sergei Sobyanin, claimed that Russian forces had shot down 450 drones heading towards Moscow, describing the attack as “unprecedented”. According to Russian authorities, the strikes damaged an oil refinery, while several residential buildings caught fire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had struck a “significant” Russian oil facility, as well as a logistics site in the Moscow region, arguing that these are infrastructure facilities generating “billions of dollars that sustain the Russian war machine”.

Dead and injured in the strikes

The governor of the Moscow region said that a 44-year-old woman was killed in the Sofino area when a drone struck a three-storey residential building. Five other people were injured in the attack, including two children. An elderly man was also killed when a drone struck a private home in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo area.

Videos circulating on social media purportedly show explosions in the night sky over Moscow, as well as a building engulfed in flames. The footage has not been independently verified. Moscow’s mayor also said that a drone struck a building near one of the city’s main avenues, while a facility at an oil refinery was damaged in what he claimed was an attempt “to disrupt” Russia’s parliamentary elections.

The attack also led to temporary restrictions on operations at Moscow’s airports. Sheremetyevo, the Russian capital’s largest airport, announced restrictions during the night, while all arrivals and departures were suspended at Vnukovo Airport. The restrictions were lifted on Sunday morning, although authorities warned that some flights could face delays.

The attack took place on the third day of voting in Russia’s parliamentary elections, a process closely controlled by the Kremlin and which critics have described as unfair and lacking transparency. Russian state media also reported that an election official was among the two people killed in a drone attack on a bus in a Moscow-controlled area of the Kherson region.

Eight killed in Russian attacks on Ukraine

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities announced that eight people, including three children, were killed in Russian attacks in the Kyiv and Sumy regions. In the city of Fastiv, in the Kyiv region, a mother and her two young children, a boy and a girl, were killed, according to regional head Tymur Tkachenko.

He later said that a child who had been injured in a separate attack in the city of Vyshhorod, north of Kyiv, died from their injuries in hospital. In the Sumy region, four people were killed when a Russian drone struck the car in which they were travelling, according to local official Oleh Hryhorov.

Russia and Ukraine have intensified their attacks in recent days, targeting energy facilities, transport infrastructure and major logistics hubs. Strikes on energy infrastructure continued despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the two sides had agreed not to attack such targets.

On Friday, Trump signed legislation providing for sanctions targeting the Russian economy through tariffs on major markets for Russian oil and natural gas, including China and India. The legislation gives the US president the power to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on major buyers of Russian energy.
