Proto Thema Journalist Frixos Dracontidis and photoreporter William Faithful followed Yanis Varoufakis to Aegina before being attacked by the former finance minister’s police bodyguards. The same man who once walked nonchalant down Syntagma Square and who fearlessly chatted with his attackers at a restaurant at Exarchia has now hired bodyguards to protect him.
Varoufakis – who chose not to vote on Greece’s reform proposals to creditors with other lawmakers – was on a ferry boat heading to his holiday home on the island of Aegina on Friday. Proto Thema’s journalists documenting this were accosted by three of his personal bodyguards who grabbed Dracontidis by the neck to push him out of the way causing bodily harm.
Danae Stratou, the same woman who flung herself on her husband when he was attacked by anti-state hoodlums at an Exarchia restaurant last month, just stood by and recorded the incident on her phone.
Later, he took to Twitter (in Greek) stating: “Thankfully there are people who respect what it means for me to have a weekend with my daughter before she returns to Australia where she lives.”
Citizen Protection Minister Yiannis Panousis was informed of the incident and said he would investigate it, whereas the journalist has alrady sued the former minister, his wife and three of his personal security guards.
Noteworthy is the fact that Varoufakis had once said that he prefers to walk among the people without bodyguards and would quit once he felt the need to be protected from them… Well, truth be told, he quit!
