Get set for the Greek 40C heat wave: Tips to deal with soaring temperatures

Be prepared as temperatures are set to soar

Fair weather and high temperatures are forecast for Wednesday with a heatwave engulfing most of the country. Local temperatures could reach 40C in central and the southern mainland.

Wind velocity will reach 4 on the Beaufort scale. Fair weather will be noted in the northern and the western parts of the country with temperatures up to 36C. Fair weather in the eastern parts with temperatures up to 38C. Sunny weather over the Aegean islands and Crete, up to 37C. Fair in Athens, up to 39C. Same weather in Thessaloniki, up to 37C.

Tips

The warning has been signaled for pollution in Athens on Wednesday and Thursday to be worsened by the high temperatures. Citizens are advised to avoid traveilng by car and avoid refueling their cars before sunset.

Take advantage of colling power of water. Fill buchets, basins and soak your feet. Take regular cool showers. Remember to consume more water and maintain an adequate level of hydration.

Eliminate extra sources of heat. Eat fresh foods that do not require you to use an oven. Also avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeine.

Try to visit public buildings with air conditioning. The elderly are advised to visit senior citizens recreation centers.
