A retrospective of works by artist C. Grammatopoulos

Costas Grammatopoulos’ famous etchings and artworks are featured at the B&M Theodorakis Foundation through to September

Over 150 representative works of the great engraver and painter Constantinos Grammatopoulos (1916-2003) are open to the public at the B & M Theocharakis Foundation in a retrospective exhibition that runs through to September 21. The display was officially opened by Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni who marveled at the multilayered quality of the works.

Art-lovers have the unique opportunity to see works by the great artist spanning over a period from 1935 through to 2003. The exhibition includes exceptional works created during his studies at the Ècole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the illustrious posters against the Italian invaders that became the reason he got arrested during the occupation, as well as the portraits of important Greek writers (Sikellianos, Palamas, Terzakis, Venezis and others).

Most Greeks, however, remember Grammatopoulos’ work with nostalgia, remembering his unrivalled illustrations of primary school readers with fondness. Generations of children learnt to read with Mimi, Elly, Anna and the typical Greek family of the time.

The display runs through to September 21 form Monday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Tickets are at 6 euros and 3 euros. The B & M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music is located at the corner of 9 Vas. Sofias Ave and 1 Merlin St. Telephone (+30) 210 361 1206.
