The European Commission estimates the implementation of the measures attached to the new Greek rescue plan will have a positive impact on Greek society. The Commission made its first public evaluation of the new plan Wednesday, reporting that if the measures were adopted to the tee and in a timely fashion ‘they will help Greece return to stability and growth both in an economically and socially viable way and will contribute to the satisfaction of the most pressing social challenges’. The EC focuses its conclusions on a series of positive social effects like the gradual adoption of a minimum guaranteed wage and the provision of universal health care; ensuring that everyone contributes to the efforts according to their financial abilities; targeting on cutbacks that do not directly affect ordinary citizens’ incomes, like reducing military expenditure, or rectifying public sector mismanagement; among others.
