European Commission knew about snap elections, says spokesperson

Review targets realistic says EU source

European Commission representative Annika Breidthardt said Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was fully aware of the decision by Greek PM Alexis Tsipras to resign and call snap elections.

The German spokesperson said Juncker was informed of the decision by the Greek PM and President Prokopis Pavlopoulos by phone, adding that the Commission believes it very important that the program agreed upon between Greece and the international creditors receive full support in order to continue the necessary reforms.

An EU source said that the scheduled October review for the progress of the Greek program by the EU institutions remains a realistic target, as an interim Greek government will suffice for the implementation of the prior-actions passed in the Greek parliament.
