Chinese Premier Li Keqiang gave a vote of confidence to the Greek economy, showing his support for the coalition government.

The Chinese leader’s statement regarding the Greek bonds is very important, in view of the negotiations for debt relief and a new loan scheduled for this summer…

Mr. Keqiang’s commitment that “China will continue to be a long-term and responsible investor in Greek bonds” was extremely well-timed for Athens.

The Chinese Premier’s commitment to support Greek economy made the headlines of the international media, including the Wall Street Journal.

As the WSJ notes, speaking at a news conference with his Greek counterpart, Antonis Samaras, the Chinese premier called on Greece to continue with its reforms, but also praised the country for its efforts to overhaul its economy.

“We never abandoned the Greek bond market, but have increased our purchases,” Mr. Li said, speaking through an interpreter. “I have expressed my will to Mr. Samaras that when the Greek government issues a new Greek bond, China will continue to be a long-term and responsible investor in Greek bonds.”.

During the visit, Greece and China were due to sign some 19 separate commercial agreements, worth an estimated $7 billion, covering shipping, energy, construction, building materials and farm products.

According to WSJ, the visit this month by Mr. Li is seen as bringing a further deepening in the commercial relations between Greece and China, particularly in shipping.
