Many a stories have been told by people waking up from comas about what they experienced during their unconsciousness. From white shinning white lights in a tunnel, to burning hell fires and other scarier descriptions.

Claire Wineland, an 18-year old from America described her experience while she was in coma in a very vivid way in a video she uploaded. Claire was put into a medically induced coma for 2 weeks when she was 13, so that doctors could save her from a life-threatening infection.

The teenager suffers from cystic fibrosis – a condition where the lungs and digestive system are clogged by gathering sticky mucus. In her video Claire describes what she experienced while in the two-week sleep state.

In medically induced comas doctors temporarily put patients to sleep by administering them with drugs to protect the brain from swelling after an injury or an infection. They differ from ‘natural commas’ in that the doctors can bring the patients out of the unconscious state whenever they decide to, while patients are able to have contact with their surrounding environment.

The young lady described how she ’travelled’ to Alaska and saw the icy ridges ‘spotting a dear crouching in the distance’. She says the scenery depended on whose voice she could hear. When she heard the voices of people she loved the scenery was serene and calm.

At one stage of her coma the doctors covered her with ice packs to cool her down and she hallucinated she was in Alaska. ‘Being in a comma is a very magnified and intense version of our own dreams’, said the 18-year-old.
