A passion crime at Salamina shocks local community

A torrid affair that ended in what appears to be a murder-suicide

A crime of passion has left the local community of Salamina, an island in the Saronic Gulf near Piraeus, in a state of shock when news that a coast guard official employed in the submarine disaster unit shot his lover before committing suicide. The 35-year-old man shot the 44-year-old woman, a well-known dental technician, in the stomach before shooting himself in the head.

The woman is a mother of two who had a turbulent affair with the man, also married. It is believed that the woman had told her husband about the affair before the incident. She had made a decision to end the affair and return to her husband to work on their marriage.

The suspected suicide murderer had made an appointment with the woman to have a final discussion concerning their relationship and she agreed.

The two bodies were found in a car parked in the man’s carriage.  He was found by his pregnant wife who was not aware of the affair.

The affair had begun in 2012, both were attracted to each other. The older woman was a harried working mother of two bored with her marriage and he was a newly-wed. The attraction was strong and they began an on-again off-again relationship.

People close to the 35-year-old said that he was passionately in love with the older woman.

Neighbors who knew the man and his pregnant wife told Proto Thema that they were shocked when they found out that he was sexually involved with another woman.

“He and his wife seemed a very happy couple. It wasn’t a long time since they had married. They didn’t have children, but they were planning to have some,” said a neighbor.

People who know the young man said he was active and good-hearted. He enjoyed the sea and diving, whereas mountain biking was among his favorite hobbies.

The man used his service gun to kill his lover and then turned it on himself.

The bodies were found by a relative and his wife in his garage. The wife, in a state of shock, immediately called the police.

The police took lab samples from the fingers of the 35-year-old and the spouses of the dead couple.
