Archaeologist Xeni Arapogianni uncovered asclepio, an ancient healing center, in a forest of olive trees above the city of Kalamata in the southern Peloponnese seven years ago. The bone-white excavation tells us a lot about Ancient Thouria, the ancient city it belonged to. Homer had referenced the city. Unfortunately, Arapogianni has been unable to continue her excavation because she has to rely on money from private sources to continue her work due to austerity measures.
She has found sixteen tombs of noblemen from Ancient Mycenae dating back to 1,400 B.C. on local farmer Antonis Tsaglis land, however the state hasn’t paid Tsaglis for the land as there isn’t any money. As a result, the tombs remain unexcavated, guarded by nobody but a local farmer.
