Giannis Antetokounmpo is among the top basketball players in the world, but above all the Greek Freak is a restless and industrious spirit. The top Greek basketball player who has won everything in the NBA with the Bucks has decided to invest as a producer in a National Geographic documentary entitled “Flagmakers”, which is mainly about immigrants who work in a factory in Wisconsin.
The documentary deals with the life and working conditions of dozens of immigrants who are employed in a factory in the State of Wisconsin, the Bucks’ home state. The factory makes 5 million American flags a year.
Giannis Antetokounmpo spoke about his decision and explained the reasons he decided to be part of the film:
“As an immigrant, I consider this particular film extremely personal and a deeply moving testament to those who call this country “home”. Each of these inspiring individuals have overcome adversity and challenges in their lives and brought these unique experiences and stories to bear as they craft the American flag.”
The documentary is directed by academy-award-winning Cynthia Wade.
Giannis is the child of immigrants from Nigeria who was born in Greece and grew up in Sepolia an Athens neighbourhood. He had a difficult childhood and teenage years but Greece embraced him and he honours its flag both when he plays with the national team and with the Bucks.
A few days ago he wrote about the presence of Greece in the 2022 Eurobasket:
“This summer
This team
This jersey
This flag
Made me fall in love with basketball all over again.
We kept our promise, we gave everything.”
