Bakoyanni: In 2020, we found ourselves with our finger on the trigger with Turkey

The reality will come crashing down on Skopje's nationalists, remarked Dora Bakoyannis, Kasselakis and the concepts of foreign policy, her message to Edi Rama

Newsroom May 14 10:18

Dora Bakoyanni emphasized the purpose of Mitsotakis’ visit to Ankara was to maintain calm with regards to the issue of the Greek-Turkish dispute, particularly concerning the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and to promote bilateral issues for instance, migration and economic goals. She stressed Greece’s consistent line of not discussing sovereignty issues but advocated for dialogue between leaders. Bakoyannis highlighted the tense situation in 2020 and the importance of avoiding escalation. She acknowledged the challenges of dealing with Erdogan.

The New Democracy MP criticized Erdogan’s government for converting the Monastery of Chora into a mosque, stating it was a colossal mistake and not in line with Turkey’s cultural significance. She emphasized that the mosaics should not be covered and called the decision inappropriate and wrong. Regarding marine parks, she supported the government’s stance on environmental protection. Bakoyannis highlighted her party’s commitment to defending national interests and rejecting populism. She stressed the importance of responsibility with reference to national interests both domestically and internationally.
