Update: According to local French media in Normandy, a priest was killed during an operation to free five hostages held by two armed men with knives in a Church in the region of Normandy in France. Father Jacques Hamel, 84, had his throat slit, investigative sources said. Five people – reportedly the priest, two nuns and two worshippers – were inside the church in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, near Rouen, when it came under attack. The two men have been killed by police after they murdered the priest who was in the middle of mass. French newspaper ‘Le Figaro’ reports that a nun who managed to escape set off the alarm. Two men wielding knives entered the Church and took the people hostages. Reports says French President Francois Hollande is on route to the area. According to some accounts, the two men were shouted something in favour of the Islamic State. (IS) during their attack. The motivations for the hostage-taking were not yet clear, but the Paris prosecutor’s office said the case had been handed to anti-terrorism judges for investigation.
