Businessman Dimitris Kontominas passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 83.

Dimitris Kontominas passed away in the private hospital where he was treated for the last few months.

The businessman was active in the field of insurance, television, cinemas and retail.

Dimitris Kontominas was born on June 3, 1939 in Athens. He studied at the American University of Beirut.

Initially he worked as an insurer at American Life (ALICO), while in 1969 he co-founded the insurance company Interamerican with Alexandros Tambouras.

Following the accession of INTERAMERICAN to the EUREKO Group, he retained the position of President of the INTERAMERICAN Group, but in addition to Interamerican he has established or acquired a number of other companies, including:

* Interbank (meanwhile acquired and absorbed by EFG Eurobank)

* Intertech (Panasonic Exclusive Product Representative)

* The Euroclinic of Athens

* Novabank (in 2006 it was renamed Millennium Bank)

* The fleet of Interjet aircraft and helicopters

* The organic farming company GreenFarm

* For the period 1998-2001 he was the owner of ARIS FC

* Owned 33% of the shares of the Alpha TV station and the Alpha radio station (the remaining 66% is owned by the RTL group)

* Village Roadshow Greece cinemas

* The TV Channel 9 in Athens and Thessaloniki.

* The Mediterra Winery in Crete

For a number of years he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Insurance Companies of Greece, while he was also president in 1998 and the two years 2001-02.

He had an exuberant social, philanthropic and cultural work and has received awards and titles for his work. He was the Chairman of the Board of the Hatzikonsta Foundation and a member of various cultural associations and organizations while he has been proclaimed “Grand Archon of the Ecumenical Throne” by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and “Great Benefactor” by the Great and Elder Diocese Metropolis of Chalcedon.

He had a daughter and two grandchildren.
