Chania: Syrian refugees refuse to leave for Athens

About 50 people disagree to be moved in Athens because they fear of worse conditions

50 Syrians refuse to leave from Hania where they are staying at the hotel “Elena”, in order to be moved in Athens even if their move was ordered yesterday by the public prosecutor. They will not get in the ship for Piraeus.

They fear that in Athens the conditions will be worse for them and their small children, as so far no one has told them what the plan of their movement is and they seek either to be transferred in other countries of Europe which they will have a more favorable treatment, or to another area in Chania.
At the same time, the “Citizens’ Initiative: The human comes first ” is seeking a permanent solution to the configuration of a specific hosting space to be able to address similar incidents in the future. For that matter will be a press conference tomorrow at 12 noon outside the hotel.

Earlier today there was tension in the hotel when the police tried to evacuate it with the refugees seeking to be given to them in writing and in their language the court order.
At the same time in Chania, the plan of their transportation to the building of the former Psychiatric Hospital, can not go through, after the administration of the hospital has said that the buildings are unfit, and it seems that there aren’t any alternative buildings in the area for accommodation and housing.

Finally, it should be mentioned that the Syrians which are still “stuck” in Chania are the ones who could not leave the country illegally.
They are in a miserable economic and psychological situation and have families with babies and young children and that is why, as they say, they are asking to stay there and are afraid to go to Athens, without knowing what awaits them.
