Commissioner Avramopoulos promises aid to Greek Prez. Pavlopoulos on refugee crisis

Avramopoulos to also meet with PM Thanou

The President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos received European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos, Saturday at the presidential residence in Athens. The Greek president informed the Commissioner on the dire situation regarding the refugee crisis in the Greece, adding that it was ‘almost impossible for countries to deal with the migration problem on their own, especially Greece’. On his part Commissioner Avramopoulos said the Commission would release the necessary funds within the next week to assist Greece. Avramopoulos underlined that, besides the financial aid, the Commission was ready to undertake ‘ substantive initiatives’ to support Greece on the matter of dealing with the increasing influx of refugees and irregular immigrants. Commissioner Avramopoulos is also expected to meet with Greece’s caretaker PM Vasiliki Thanou, later on Saturday.
