ELSTAT: Deaths in Greece decreased by 8% in the first quarter

They amounted to 32,822, 16,597 men and 16,225 women

The death toll in Greece including Covid-19-related deaths, decreased by 2,836 or 8% in the first 13 weeks of 2024, totaling 32,822 (16,597 men and 16,225 women). Compared to the same period in 2023, where it was 35,658 (17,822 men and 17,836 women), this marks a notable decline.

ELSTAT reports a decrease of 2,795 deaths (7.8%) compared to the average of total deaths in the first 13 weeks for the years 2018-2023 (35,617 deaths).

There have been varying percentage changes, with 2023 showing a decrease of 13.2% compared to 2022 and increases in earlier years. For the first 13 weeks of 2024 compared to 2023, there’s a reduction in deaths across all weeks, with the most significant drops observed in the 7th, 9th, and 8th weeks.

In terms of age groups, decreases in deaths are noted across most groups, with the most significant reductions seen in those aged 80 to 84, 85 to 89, and over 90 years. By region of residence, deaths decreased in all regions, with the most notable reductions observed in Attica, Central Macedonia, and Western Greece.
