Former Greek PM Karamanlis: I will not be a candidate – Mitsotakis: I thank him for everything

PM Mitsotakis reportedly asked him to make a speech at a New Democracy event in Thessaloniki, which the former prime minister accepted

The former Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis announced his decision not to be a candidate in the upcoming elections. He emphasized that he made the decision to complete his parliamentary career, clarifying that he always supports the New Democracy government.

Kostas Karamanlis said in his statement:

“I have decided that it is time to complete my parliamentary journey.

Therefore, I will not be a candidate in the upcoming elections.

Obviously, I always support the New Democracy government, the party founded by Konstantinos Karamanlis and have served continuously for almost half a century.

Faithful to its history, ideology, principles and values. With respect and love for all its people and all Greek citizens”.

Mitsotakis: I thank him for his long-term contribution to the party

After the statement of Kostas Karamanlis, Kyriakos Mitsotakis issued a statement thanking him for his contribution to the party.

Specifically, it states:

“I want to thank Kostas Karamanlis for his long-term contribution to the faction and the place. Personally, in fact, I do not forget that under his own party leadership I joined politics.

I know that he always has New Democracy in his heart. Much more so today, when the turning point in his own multi-year journey coincides with the opening of new and optimistic horizons for our country and our party.

That is why I am sure that, wherever he is, he will continue to devote all his energy for the good of Greece and our great party. And he will be present in the great election battle that is about to begin”.

What Mitsotakis and Karamanlis said in the conversation that preceded the announcements

According to information, Kostas Karamanlis spoke yesterday morning at 11 in good terms with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who called him to see his intentions. “I have made my decision, I am thinking of doing other things” said Mr. Karamanlis with Mr. Mitsotakis replying: “I accept and respect it”.

“I am leaving now that the party is strong and I am sure we will win the elections”, added Mr. Karamanlis during the conversation, according to government sources.

As for how Mr. Karamanlis – who made it clear that he will support the faction – will participate in the election campaign, Kyriakos Mitsotakis reportedly asked him to make a speech at a New Democracy event in Thessaloniki, which the former prime minister accepted.

At the same time, according to sources close to Mr. Karamanlis, his decision not to run in the elections was made a long time ago. At the same time, he wanted there to be a wording that would show that he does not question the government, for this reason he also states that he will always support it.
