France bombs ISIS targets in Syria in symbolic airstrike (Video)

France retaliates against ISIS with 10 jets, 20 bombs, 30 targets

French fighter jets bombed ISIS-affiliated targets in Raqqa, Syria, late on Sunday. The air strikes came 48 hours after multiple attacks at entertainment and sports venues in Paris for which ISIS claimed responsibilities.

French President Francois Hollande described the 129 killings on the streets of Paris as “an act of war.” The retaliation for the air strikes that destroyed 20 targets was largely symbolic after the attacks, because France has been conducting airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria since September as part of a US-led coalition.

The French jets involved in the airstrikes took off from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan to destroy targets identified in previous reconnaissance missions.

Targets included munitions depots and a training camp. There was no word on casualties or the damage inflicted as it is hard to know what is happening inside Raqqa – a city increasingly isolated since ISIS took over.

Following the Paris attacks, ISIS fighters had expected retaliation and had prepared by evacuating key facilities. An ISIS media wing said that the airstrikes had struck abandoned facilities and that nobody had been killed however these reports have not been confirmed.
