Germans want immigrants to speak German at home

“Don’t speak your home country’s language if you want to live here!” is the general sentiment of a totally absurd suggestion

The German conservative Christian Social Union has been mocked over a draft bill that states that people who want permanent German residency should speak German in public as well as in the privacy of their own home with family members. The party that suggested this is one of the three parties in the German government. Their suggestion was criticized by their allies, including Christian Democrats General Secretary Peter Tauber, from German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s own party, who posted on Twitter that its none of politicians’ business whether he spoke Latin, Klingon or Hessian at home.

The proposal comes at a time when there is a sharp rise in immigration levels in Germany from eastern European Union members as well as a surge in asylum seekers from Syria.
