Government spokesperson: Early elections a possibility

Talks with creditors are on a good track

Speaking to a Greek radio station, government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili did not rule out the possibility of early elections once the deal between the institutions and the Greek government was passed through parliament on August 18. She clarified that if elections were called they would be held under the current electoral system which gives a 50 seat bonus to the first party, It should be noted that SYRIZA was one of the most fervent champions of changing the electoral law to proportionate representation.

Commenting on the negotiations under way with the Quartet she underlined that they were at a satisfactory stage, adding that the Greek side was trying to guarantee the best possible terms. The issue of the 100 payments to tax services and the imposition of revenue or property criteria on the revision was also on the table of discussions with the Quartet.

Sources say that the Greek government is seeking equivalent measures to compensate for the Quartet’s proposals for the abolition of the zero deficit clause and the privatization of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADME). SYRIZA’s Economic Policy cabinet meeting is scheduled to convene Wednesday 6 pm.
