Gov’t fears ‘Resign’ movement rallies

Government attacks main opposition party saying that the tactics followed by ND were “foolish” and “extortionary”

It seems that the anti-government rallies organized by ‘Resign’ movement and scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 18:30 in Athens and at 20:00 in Thessaloniki will define the political developments of the summer period due to the political turmoil emerged on the occasion of the ‘Resign’ movement.

The Greek government, fearing of a possible escalation of social anger that boils after the harsh austerity measures that the ruling party has accepted and is ready to impose, is trying to undermine the importance of these protest rallies lashing out at the organizers of the movement and main opposition party New Democracy.

The Greek PM’s Office issued a non-paper criticizing New Democracy for hatching a plan to incite social tensions, while government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili dubbed the protest a ‘hostile move’ towards the country.

Moreover, government sources said that the tactics followed by ND were “foolish” and “extortionary” and accused the party of trying to create an artificial climate of “anti-democratic deviation”.

“ND has adopted a political plan whose main axis is the formula: ‘economic difficulty and anti-democratic deviation = social unrest.’ This plan is very fashionable, at this time, against left-wing governments in various parts of the world,” the sources noted.

Attacking the government and SYRIZA party in an announcement on Tuesday, ND said that “they have admitted that they are the worst and most authoritarian government of the post-junta era.”

Moreover, anti-authoritarians announced that they will hold a rally at 19:00 at Syntagma Square opposing at ‘Resign’ movement triggering new political confrontation with ND saying that “for the first time in world’s history, anarchists organize a rally to defend the government.”
