Greek gov’t wants to change electoral law to control political developments

A key element on the change of electoral law is reducing the 50-seat bonus

The Greek government aims to change the electoral law and it is quite possible to do so after the completion of the first review of the Greek program.

According to information, by changing the electoral law the government aims to control and define any political developments hoping that establishing a more proportional representation might help to prevent leader of New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis from gaining more power in Parliament.

A key element on the change of electoral law is reducing the 50-seat bonus for the first party. In that way, it will be impossible for a party to win majority, while forming coalition governments would be the only solution.

A more proportional system (with no seat bonus or even a reduced bonus of 20 seats, as it has been proposed) would allow the party that came second in the elections to form a government, as it happened in Portugal, where the second party formed a government without the participation of the first party.
