Le Figaro: Snap elections could undermine deal between Greece and creditors

Political instability does not help

Conservative French newspaper ‘Le Figaro’ underlined that the decision by Greek PM Alexis Tsipras to call snap elections has weakened the country’s agreement with its creditors. “Greece: What is the future of the aid package”, wonders the French newspaper’s article. After the first 23bln Euro-installment was released to Greece from the new rescue deal via the ESM the Greek PM resigned and called snap elections for September 20 in a brief TV address. The paper estimates that the political instability as a result of the snap elections could undermine the deal.

Meanwhile, Martin Zelmyr, head of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s cabinet tweeted before the formal announcement by Tsipras: “Swift elections in Greece can be a way to broaden support for ESM stability support programme just signed by PM Tsipras on behalf of Greece”
