Most people would probably choose to live in a house exposed to natural sun light and with plenty of fresh air. Manuel Barrantes is the exception, as the Costa Rican man started digging a hole 12 years ago to build a subterranean house. The result was an amazing underground house 20 meters below the surface. Barrantes dug through red soil and volcanic rock to protect himself and his family from noise pollution and the effects of climate change. A Reuters photographer captured stunning images from his underground world.
