Watch live: Mercury to pass between Sun and Earth at 2.12pm

Can only be viewed through special filters

The Solar System’s smallest planet, Mercury, is set to pass between the Sun and Earth from around 11:12 GMT to 18:42, Monday May 9. Sky watchers round our planet will be able to experience the phenomenon, including Greece. The previous time Mercury had followed a similar path was in 2006. Then Greece was not of the lucky places to see the astronomic phenomenon. Astronomers say the passing by of Mercury will be visible for the most part from Greece, however, the small planet’s exit from the Sun’s disk will not be visible from Greece because of the fact the Sun will set an hour earlier. Mercury is expected to enter the solar disk at around 2.12pm Greek time. Experts warn that the phenomenon can only be viewed through special solar filters, telescopes or binoculars.
