Merkel tells Bundestag that deal with Athens is “possible”

The German Chancellor’s address

German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed the Bundestag on Thursday morning, ahead of the Eurogroup meeting on Greece. Taking the podium she said that her goal was to keep Greece in the euro, stating that a deal with creditors “is still possible.”

“Greece is on a good path, but it has not been completed. It has dragged its heels on necessary structural reforms,” she said, giving a measured speech that repeated her mantra “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Her speech was relatively impassioned, apart from the part where she said that the “euro is far more than a currency.”

Some German MPs heckled when she said that “self-responsibility and solidarity go hand in hand.”
