Foreign national sets himself on fire in Piraeus

The reason for the self-immolation remains a mystery

A man who set fire to himself at dawn on Tuesday in Piraeus was rushed to a nearby hospital in a serious condition. The incident took place at roughly 3 a.m. on Vitolion street. Eye witnesses said the man, a foreign national believed to be an irregular migrant, poured gasoline over his body and then lit a match.

He was immediately engulfed in flames as he screamed. People rushed to help and managed to put out the fire.

He was rushed to a hospital in the Nikea district. Police are investigating the cause of the self-immolation.
