Minister linked to extremist Tweets the first 'victim' in new day-old govt

New era emerged in Greek politics with the adage of “those who live by Twitter, die by Twitter”

The first “crack” in the day-old second Tsipras government of 2015 swirled around a deputy minister from the rightist-populist Independent Greeks’ (AN.EL) party, whose social media accounts were punctuated by a series of anti-Semitic and racists posts.

Late Wednesday evening, Panos Kammenos — again appointed as the defence minister in the Tsipras government — Tweeted towards his fellow Kammenos (no family relation):

“Until proof of the truth in the case of anti-Semitic, racist posts, the deputy minister would facilitate (developments) with his resignation”, was Panos Kammenos message over the same social media where Dimitris Kammenos was known by the username “portaporta”, which means “door-to-door” in Greek.

Dimitris Kammenos obliged the other Kammenos an hour later, announcing his resignation and promising to file a lawsuit against unknown persons over what he called the “supposed Tweets” attributed to him.
According to reports, PM Alexis Tsipras had broached the possible sacking of newly sworn-in Deputy Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Minister Dimitris Kammenos with AN.EL leader and DM Panos Kammenos, no relation.
Tsipras, in Brussels for an extraordinary summit on the refugee/migrant crisis, reportedly called his coalition partner over the furor, which was the number one hashtag for Greek Twitter users on Wednesday, expectedly listed as #portaporta.
One “condition” reportedly needed to fire Dimitris Kammenos is to “authenticate” the posts, given that the latter blamed “hackers and … (15) associates” for the controversial posts.
Dimitris Kammenos duly deleted both his Twitter and Facebook accounts on Wednesday. However, because nothing is ever really “deleted” on the Internet, users began to flood social media with posts showing an animosity towards Jews and homosexuals, among others.
Here’s his reaction:
“Regarding the content of comments made in social media under my name, I do not bear personal responsibility for many of them, and I state that my accounts have been compromised more than four times. As proof, my Facebook account has been blocked since just before the elections by unknown hackers,” he said in a statement.
He also said his social media accounts are managed by “more than 15 associates” before offering an apology for any offense made.
