Monemvasia offers the food of love

Monemvasia, a romantic getaway, combines a scenic fortress with gastronomical delights

Award-winning British chef Richard Stein and a BBC production crew visited the fortress town of Monemvasia in Laconia, linked to the Southeastern Peloponnese by a 200-meter causeway. They stayed in the area from July 28 to 31 filming for an upcoming TV show about different cuisines from around the world.

Mr. Stein sampled some of the region’s gastronomic delights, including the Vatika onion the renowned mullets and shrimp of Gerakas that were washed down with Malvasia wine. The chef was informed on various local recipes that were quite popular in the past when weddings took place in the area and also filmed the watermill at Talanta.

“This is the largest TV production that we have hosted over the years,” the president of the Monemvasia Tourism Promotion Committee, Babis Lyras, said in an announcement. He added that gastronomy is one of the most important elements of Monemvasia’s tourism product.
