Party leaders warn SYRIZA govt against any ‘drachma’ scenarios

Theodorakis: I don’t believe Tsipras wants to lead country towards rocks, but a catastrophe often occurs by mistake

Opposition leaders reacted to Sunday’s abrupt end of negotiations in Brussels between the Greek government and creditors, with New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras referring to a “threat” entailed with a Eurozone exit and a return to a national currency.

Speaking to party cadres from Kastoria in northern Greece, Samaras, the previous PM whose seen his popularity continually decrease, said his successor, Alexis Tsipras and the latter’s SYRIZA party “fooled the people, they deceived the people and led the country to international isolation.”

“The drachmas theory will not pass because the vast majority of people do not want an exit from the euro,” he said, warning that the danger of SYRIZA desiring to take Greece out of the eurozone had been clearly stated before.

He also opposed another snap election, saying the country cannot tolerate a return of the ballot boxes.

On his part, centrist Potami party leader Stavros Theodorakis warned that “we must finish with negotiations over the next few days. I hope Mr Tsipras acts as a prime minister and not as the SYRIZA leader.”

Theodorakis, a well-known TV journalist and current affairs program presenter, added that although some of the radical leftist ministers point to a majority of party supporters in favor of a “rift” with Europe, this figure does not represent ordinary Greeks.

“I don’t believe Mr Tsipras wants to lead our country towards the rocks, although a catastrophe often occurs by mistake,” he warned.
