25 huge ancient constructions in southern Evia, known as Drakospita (Dragon Houses), lie on the steep cliff. They are built with huge slabs of limestone and have monolithic jambs and lintels and stone shelves protruding from the wall and are sturdy despite having no connective material to hold them firmly in place. Some claim these houses were ancient sanctuaries to honor Zeus or Hera or Hercules, but others believe that they were guard posts. The most impressive is the one located at Mt. Ochi that stands at an altitude of 1,389 meters above Karystos.
