Just two kilometers away from Turkey, the miniscule island’s official name is Megisti (meaning “Biggest”) but since the 12th century it derived its name from the castle. In the 19th-century, its population numbered 10,000 and it was a safe harbor for trading ships. Decay set in the 20th century, was accelerated by the decline of the Ottoman Empire. These days, only 492 people live on the island, with thriving expat communities Australia, Egypt and the U.S. They call themselves “Kazzies”.
