A place of gory battles and carnage, Frangocastello is haunted by those who have been slaughtered at the site. Locals and visitors from all around Crete sleep outside the castle on May 17 waiting for the strange phenomenon of flickering shadows, resembling mounted warriors, to miraculously appear.  They are called “Drosoulites”.
