It is located just 5 km from the city center of Ioannina, on the way to Metsovo. It dates back to approximately 1.500.000 years and is part of a riverbed when the waters of Lake Pamvotis covered the entire basin of the city of Ioannina. The first modern references to the existence of the cave date back to WWII when the residents of Perama found shelter there during the bombings.
