Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined at the NATO Summit in Madrid that the sanctions decided to be applied by all members are very important for substantive and symbolic reasons, reiterating during his speech that Greece stood by Ukraine from the very beginning and pointed out that the Russian invasion has made it clear that the NATO’s mission to defend the territorial integrity of human rights and international law is no longer a blank slate.

He pointed out the importance of the Alliance’s unity, speed, and determination in dealing with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and stressed the need to should continue in this direction.

The Prime Minister also welcomed the trilateral agreement between Turkey, Finland, and Sweden and expressed his satisfaction that any difficulties were overcome.

Mitsotakis expressed his satisfaction with the prospect of Finland and Sweden joining NATO, while he reiterated that Greece is a pillar of stability for NATO and that, at this juncture, no other areas of instability are allowed within the Alliance.

“I also want to express my satisfaction with the fact that today the Alliance will invite Finland and Sweden to become the 31st and 32nd members of the Alliance. In the end, common sense and the good of the Alliance prevailed and any opportunistic and utilitarian behaviours were overcome”.
