Political turmoil after Minister Filis lashes out at ‘Resign’ movement

He questioned the legitimacy of a protest organized by ‘Resign’ movement

Minister of Education Nikos Filis fueled political and social turmoil when he questioned the legitimacy of the protest rally organized by ‘Resign’ movement and scheduled to take place on June 15 at the center of Athens.

Mr. Filis questioned the legitimacy of the protest arguing that it undermines the government forgetting probably that he comes from the left-wing which supports the right to demonstrate and protest.

“Anyone can organize whatever protest rally he might want. This is something else. We have democracy. But, of course, no one can organize an undermining political intervention, because the political perversion – to distort what the government says – is something that does not promote democracy. Organizing protests based on unreal popular problems and announcements on what might happen in a year is something that has little to do with democracy,” he said.

His statements caused the reaction of the organizers and main opposition party New Democracy, which asked for his resignation.
