The animated movie starring Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Jack Black received mix reviews from critics but appears to have hit the right note with audiences around the world

Thirty years after failing to win over audiences on their first attempt at box office glory, Super Mario and his twin brother Luigi finally conquered the big screen. Less than five weeks after its April 5 release, “Super Mario Bros. Movie” has surpassed $1 billion in global box office, making it by far the highest-grossing video game adaptation so far.

The animated movie starring Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Jack Black received mix reviews from critics but appears to have hit the right note with audiences around the world. According to The Numbers, the film has raked in $518 million in domestic box office and $642 million in international box office to date, more than doubling the box office haul of “Warcraft: The Beginning”, which had been the highest-grossing game-based feature film so far.

Having made its debut in an arcade game in 1983, Super Mario is the most successful video game character of all time, according to Guinness World Records. For almost four decades, Super Mario has been Nintendo’s figurehead and a staple in the video game industry, with countless games, a theme park and now two movies cementing his status as the world’s most famous plumber.
