SYRIZA in search of allies ahead of crucial presidential election

George Papandreou’s decision to launch a new party may complicate things

It seems that main opposition leader Alexis Tsipras has received a mandate to negotiate with every possible ally ahead of the crucial presidential election battle and the national elections that are to follow, if the government fails to secure the necessary 180 votes.

Following the recent political developments, triggered by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ decision to call a snap presidential election, the SYRIZA head is searching for allies from various political parties.

In fact, in order to avoid internal conflicts regarding the issue of cooperations, it has been decided that the central committee of the Coalition of the Radical Left party will not meet until the first two rounds of the Presidential Election are concluded, despite the initial request of SYRIZA’s the left wing.

According to sources, SYRIZA has agreed to include DIMAR party members in its list of candidates in the case of National Elections, to secure the party’s support.

Moreover, discussions are underway between SYRIZA and the Independent Greeks, with meetings between party leader Panos Kamenos and Tsipras’ close associate, Mr. Nikos Pappas. In this case, a form of post-election cooperation is discussed but its exact nature has not been yet determined.

Talks with independent MPs will continue in the next few days, although George Papandreou’s decision to launch a new party may complicate things.
