Main opposition Radical Left Coalition SYRIZA deputy Tasos Kourakis said that people who state that they are Greek Orthodox Christians on their tax returns should be forced to pay a special levy to fund priests and the church during a conference organized by the theological school of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The conservative New Democracy leadership immediately reacted to this statement and accused the left of trying to bring in new taxes and dividing Greeks according to religious groups.
