Turkish FM Cavusoglu: We will raise the issue of sovereignty in the islands of the Aegean if they are not demilitarized (maps)

Greek PM Mitsotakis informed Soltz about the Turkish provocations

Newsroom May 31 01:45

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, returned with inflammatory statements on the status of the Aegean islands, raising the issue of demilitarization of the islands again.

In fact, speaking to the Anadolu agency, he showed maps questioning the sovereignty the entire eastern Aegean!

Cavusoglu called for the demilitarization of the Aegean islands, otherwise he warned that Turkey would start a debate on their sovereignty.

“There is a condition in both treaties for demilitarization. Greece has been militarizing them since 1960. The islands must be demilitarized. If Greece does not back down, we will open the issue of their sovereignty for discussion”, he said, noting that Ankara had sent two letters to the UN, denouncing Athens for violating the treaties.

The Turkish Foreign Minister stated that Turkey is ending the Greek-Turkish Supreme Cooperation Council, something for which it is sent a relevant letter, referring to hostile statements by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as an “inconsistent” attitude of Athens in the dialogue efforts.

In fact, Cavusoglu accused Greek politicians of feeling that they could not please their audience if they did not make aggressive remarks against Turkey, at least 5-10 times a day.

The provocative actions of Turkey in the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean were put on the table by the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the German Chancellor, Olaf Solz in Brussels on the sidelines of the European Union Summit.

The Greek Prime Minister made special reference to the growing tension that has arisen in the region after the provocations during the first meeting he had with the newly elected Chancellor of Germany.

According to government sources, Kyriakos Mitsotakis briefed the German Chancellor in detail on the Turkish provocation, i.e. the violations and overflights of Turkish aircraft, but also on the aggressive rhetoric of the neighboring country, which, as the Greek Prime Minister said, undermines the stability of the Mediterranean.

In fact, according to information, Kyriakos Mitsotakis showed Olaf Solz the map of the so-called by Turkey “blue homeland” and asked for Germany’s support, which means to abandon the position of “equal distances”.

According to government sources, it is clear that Athens did not like the relevant statements by Deputy Government Spokeswoman Christiane Hoffman, urging the two countries to “resolve their differences through dialogue”, as if to say that both countries share an equal percentage of responsibility for the tensions in the area.
