A Turkish professor pointed out a rather uncomfortable reality and ‘double standard’ by the west regarding the sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine, calling for similar actions against Turkey for the invasion in 1974 and continued occupation of Cyprus.

“Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 and used force to break up the sovereign and independent country and has since occupied the northern mercenary with a constant military presence,” Turkish political scientist Mehmet Efe Çaman said in a recent post on social media. The self-exiled in Canada professor called on NATO and the international community to apply the same criteria to Turkey as applied to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” citing the policy of assimilation and persecution of the Kurdish population.

Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974, separated the sovereign and independent country by using force and has occupied the northern half of it ever since with a constant military presence. Turkey is a @NATO member. NATO must address it and coerce Ankara to end its illegal occupation.

So, apply the same criteria to Turkey that you apply to the Russia’s invasion in Ukraine. Russia is an aggressor state violating the international law. Turkey has been doing the same since 1974. Ergo, Turkey is also an aggressor state violating the international law.
